The annual round of GRDC Grains Research Updates is a chance for the grains community to come together to familiarise itself with the latest research outcomes, and to do that all-important professional networking.
At the Adelaide GRDC Grains Research Update for Advisers five growers from the west African nation of Ghana joined local growers, researchers and agronomists.
The growers – representing aquaculture, cropping, poultry, mango and horticulture industries – were from a larger group from the Ghana Ministry of Food and Agriculture on a two-week tour of farming systems in Australia.
“We were impressed with the timely, relevant information provided to Australian farmers,” said Gabriel Owusu, deputy director for the Directorate of Agricultural Extension Services.
“It was also interesting to observe how Australian farmers treat farming as a business. In Ghana, while there are large plantations, there are also a lot of subsistence farmers who manually farm one to two-acre (0.4 to 0.8-hectare) blocks.”
