Grain apps roll out

The GRDC is interested in ensuring that farming can be made easier and is supporting this through a range of mobile-based apps

WeedSmart app

WeedSmart

Created as part of the industry-led WeedSmart initiative with GRDC support

  • Simply answer nine short questions about the paddock’s farming system to receive an analysis of your herbicide-resistance risk and weed seedbank risk.
  • Includes suggestions for how soon you should take action.
  • Access the WeedSmart 10-point plan for 10 ways Australian growers can fight herbicide resistance.

The WeedSmart app is available for download on iPhone and iPad and is supplemented by a web version of the app for users of other devices.

Visit www.weedsmart.org.au/app for more information or to access the web app.

SoilMapp

SoilMapp

Created by CSIRO with funding from the GRDC and other industry partners

  • Learn about the likely soil types at a given location.
  • View maps, photographs, satellite images, tables and graphs of data about soils in your area.
  • Uncover the physical and chemical characteristics of a location’s soils including acidity (pH), soil carbon, available water storage, salinity and erodibility.
  • Get soil information to put into the farm computer model APSIM.
  • Access a quick-help tool for instructions on how to use the app.

The SoilMapp app is available for download on the iPad only and requires an internet connection to access soil data.

Visit www.csiro.au/soilmapp for more information.

Weeds: The Ute Guide

Weeds: The Ute Guide

Based on the popular Weeds Identification Ute Guide series

  • Browse through weed types or search for a specific weed.
  • Refine your search based on distribution, cycle, flowering times and even by whether the weed has a distinctive smell.
  • Where possible, photographs have been provided of the weed at various growth stages to assist with correct identification.
  • Compare the stock images to new photographs taken in the field or photos stored in your device’s image library.
  • Still not sure which weed it is? Use the app to email a photo of the problem weed to a contact in your device’s address book.

The WeedID app is available for download on iPhone, iPad and Android devices, with a web version coming soon.

Visit www.grdc.com.au/App-Store for more information.

CropMate VarietyChooser

Developed by the NSW Department of Primary Industries with GRDC support

Variety chooser
  • Choose the characteristics, resistance and tolerance qualities required in your variety, and view the varieties that match those requirements.
  • Variety data includes comparative percentage yield, average yield, tolerance levels and resistance ratings, as well as details of the trial series used to gather the data.
  • The app is complemented by the CropMate web version, which provides climate analysis and weather information to assist in making informed planning and management decisions during the crop cycle.
  •  The app includes trial results from the National Variety Trials.

The CropMate VarietyChooser app is available for download on iPhone and iPad and is supplemented by a web version of the app for users of other devices.

Visit http://cropmate.agriculture.nsw.gov.au for more information or to access the CropMate web app.

CliMate

Funded by the Managing Climate Variability R&D Program with GRDC support

The app allows users to interrogate climate records, ask questions relating to rainfall, temperature and radiation, as well as derived variables such as heat sums, soil water and soil nitrate, for example:

CliMate
  • What is the chance of a sowing event based on amount of rainfall over five days?
  • What is the probability of the temperature being below a critical level for germination or flowering?
  • When determining an ideal sowing date, when are heat and cold stresses lowest for the optimum sowing time?
  • When adjusting inputs during a crop or pasture season, how does the current season compare with previous conditions in terms of rainfall, temperature, heat sum or radiation?
  • How much water and nitrate have I stored over the fallow?

The CliMate app is available for download on iPhone, iPad and iPod touch and is supplemented by a web version of the app for users of other devices.

Visit www.australianclimate.net.au for more information or to access the web app.
