Former GRDC Southern Panel member Richard Konzag (right) and Larn McMurray from the South Australian Research and Development Institute (SARDI) caught up at the recent Grains Research Update at Kadina, South Australia.
It was one of Mr Konzag’s final events as a panel member, as the grower from Mallala, SA, has stepped down after seven years on the panel. Mr McMurray presented an update on lentil research and told the 140 growers in attendance that diversification in lentil variety choice was imperative for reducing disease and the agronomic and marketing risks of growing lentils on the Yorke Peninsula. He said new green lentil varieties provided an opportunity to manage production and marketing risks, but were a higher input lentil. In other lentil research, a SARDI pre-breeding project is developing herbicide tolerance, which is expected to provide weed control options in pulses.
