GRDC Research Updates are a hothouse of new projects, debate, knowledge-sharing, ready-to-go innovations and a sneak peak at what is on the horizon for our cropping industry. For this issue of Ground Cover we crossed the country to cover Updates in Adelaide, Wagga Wagga, Goondiwindi, Auburn, Perth and Yuna.
Research Updates support informed decisions

South Australian growers and their advisers were given tools and tips for making better decisions at the South Australian GRDC Research Updates in February. The two-day Adelaide Update was followed by a ‘best of’ half-day program at Auburn in the state’s Mid North cropping region. Both events aimed to deliver informed decisions for driving change.
Huddleston, SA, growers Karyn and Greg Durrant attended the Auburn GRDC Research Update.
With seeding underway, crop agronomy and physiology researcher Dr James Hunt (La Trobe University) was on hand at both events to talk growers through the results from early sowing trials.
He said across nine trial sites in SA, there was an average yield penalty of 28 kilograms per hectare for every day sowing was delayed past the end of the first week in May.
Peter Newman, from the Western Australian-based Australian Herbicide Resistance Initiative, also had some hard-hitting messages about how to achieve – and keep – a low weed seedbank. His ‘take-no-prisoners’ strategy included harvest weed-seed control, mixing and rotating chemicals, and increasing crop competition with row spacing, seeding rate, cultivar choice and crop orientation.
There were also presentations on new and emerging technologies and tools for growers, including in-paddock soil herbicide residue tests.
