Breeders have endowed a new biscuit wheat with the '3Rs' — triple resistance to stem, stripe and leaf rust. Commercial growers will plant the new wheat, Bowie, for the first time this year. Adelaide University breeder Gil Hollamby believes it will replace the staple soft variety Tatiara. Mr Hollamby believes breeders will continue to produce new and improved wheat varieties. He said GRDC's revamped procedures would enable earlier testing over wider environments of promising lines from southern breeding programs.
