Pacific Seeds P/L expects to have seed of Nusun — a "mid-oleic" mono-unsaturated sunflower with oleic acid levels between 50 and 70 per cent — ready for commercial planting in the 2000-2001 season.
According to Alan Scott, head of Pacific Seeds sunflower breeding program, Nusun is being promoted in the United States as a high-quality vegetable oil superior to cotton seed and soybean oils, especially regarding saturates. Mr Scott said Nusun sales were gathering momentum in the United States, with one large fast-food chain committing to its use.
Enough crop had been grown in Australia last season to allow oil evaluation by Australian and overseas processors.
