A Japanese-bred, South Australian field-tested malting barley line is undergoing pilot-scale brewing.
The line has been selected from about 600 tested in a collaborative program between Japan's Sapporo Breweries Ltd and the University of Adelaide.
Sapporo's Kensuke Fukuda said the joint venture arose because Schooner was no longer popular with Japanese breweries because it lacked key quality characteristics of some Canadian and European varieties.
He said the line, if it passed malting and brewing tests, would contribute to a stable supply of malting barley from Australia, but it was not intended to use this line exclusively. His brewery had a similar program under way in Canada.
