This year's Western Australian No-Tillage Farmers Association (WANTFA) Annual Conference is a cooperative effort with other grower groups — including the South Australian No-Tillage Farmers Association, NSW Central West Conservation Farmers Association and various Victorian no-tillage farmers.
With keynote speakers from South America including Carlos Crovetto and Rolf Derpsch, it's sure to give delegates a broader perspective on no-till methods.
Mr Crovetto is a no-till pioneer in Chile and is now the President of the Chile No-Tillage Farmers Association. He is an energetic and passionate no-till farmer who believes that no-tillage without stubble retention is not the complete package. He is knowledgeable on soils and soil biology and has published a book called Stubble over the Soil, which makes an excellent read.
Dr.Derpsch is one of the pioneer researchers of no-tillage, especially in Brazil, and is now based in Paraguay. He is an excellent communicator with in-depth knowledge of soil science, crop agronomy and the impact of crop rotations. Recently Dr Derpsch has become a champion for understanding cover crops and how they fit into the no-tillage cropping system.
For an Australian touch, grower Scott McCalman of 'Jedburgh in Warren, NSW, will talk about managing agricultural challenges in a way that is innovative, creative and profitable. Mr McCalman impressed most who heard him at WANTFA seminars in WA during August.
