Drought-tolerant canola for WA

THE search is on for canola varieties better adapted to WA conditions. Drought and disease problems in the last several seasons have highlighted the need for local varieties. Topping the research agenda are rapid screening techniques aimed at producing drought-tolerant varieties with high oil content. Experimental dwarf varieties as well as some that produce less extravagant flowers have been crossed and backcrossed with existing commercial varieties. Current good prices for canola are being fuelled by poor crop prospects in Canada and Europe with the latest USDA crop predictions again downgrading the crop prospects.
