New chickpeas for the Ord

FIVE new lines of high-value Kabuli-type chickpeas are under evaluation for Ord River irrigators. Selected from 60 extra large seeded lines imported from Spain and Mexico, the new lines show 25 per cent increases in yield and up to 10 per cent increased seed size in comparison to the current variety.

They'll be further evaluated and fast-tracked for release as commercial varieties within two years. The Ord River Grain Pool will assist in the evaluation and will testmarket the lines.

Chickpeas are expected to play an important role in sustainable rotations in the Ord and production is expected to rise from the current 1,000 ha to 5,000 ha with the opening of stage two of the irrigation area.
