The chairman of the southern region panel of the Grains Research and Development Corporation, Ian MacKinnon, has flagged the search for new market initiatives following the success of canola in Australia.
"We need to continue to look for those commodities that have the potential to be significant forces in the marketplace - perhaps it will be lentils, or chickpeas, or even something with specific health attributes. What all this means is that some new initiatives will have to be taken with research investments.
"The GRDC is actively seeking joint ventures and alliances to develop new food, health and industrial products derived from grain. There is particular interest, for example, in adding value to a range of pulses, in specialty oil production, and the development of nutraceuticals and biomedical products that utilise grain products."
