CHICKPEAS ARE notoriously prone to Ascochyta blight which, along with other foliar diseases, can stand between growers and a highly profitable crop.
Key points for chickpea disease management
- Timing of fungicide application is critical - apply all sprays before rain.
- Use higher fungicide rates if disease is evident.
- Spray early rather than waiting until you can see Ascochyta on the crop.
- Use a fine flat fan nozzle operating at a minimum of 4 bar pressure and 80 Llha of water.
Recommended industry strategies for reducing the bite of the Ascochyta blight include:
- Paddock selection - Choose a paddock that is at least 500 metres away from where chickpeas grew last season and increase the gap if the paddock is down wind, slope or stream.
- Variety selection - Select one of the least susceptible varieties where possible. If using a highly susceptible variety, then adopt the management strategy best suited to this higher risk.
- Seed source - Use seed from a paddock that was free of Ascochyta or where it was extremely well managed. Seek a seed test to confirm disease levels where you are uncertain about the source of seeds.
- Seed treatment - Treat all seeds with P-Pickel T®.
- Hygiene - Take all available precautions to prevent the spread of Ascochyta.
- Fungicide applications Applythe first fungicide spray 3-4 weeks after emergence (except in central Queensland) and follow the monitoring and fungicide strategy for your particular growing region as detailed in the publication
