In Australia about one-third of grains farms are producing about 80 per cent of the gross value of grain production, according to the Australiau Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics (ABARE). In its 2002 review of the Australian grains industry, ABARE reports that the highest proportion of these high-production farms are in NSW followed by Victoria, WA, SA and Queenslaud. ABARE says that while, overall, farm numbers in Australia are falling, the number of farms producing grain has remained relatively steady in the past 10 years because of the relative profitability of graingrowing compared to some other primary industries. Copies of the report, Australian Grains Industry 2002, can be obtained from Rural Connect for $40 plus postage and handling.
