SHOWN HERE is plant breeder Kath Cooper, a contributor to the latest book about triticale - A Guide to the Use of Triticale in Livestock Feeds.
Dr Cooper heads the GRDC-supported National Triticale Improvement Program and, with agronomist Chris McDonough of Rural Solutions SA, assisted principal author Robert van Barneveld with this publication. The book has been produced to provide technical information on the end uses of triticale for the major classes of livestock.
While directly aimed at nutritionists and marketers, it also contains useful information for livestock producers and grain growers.
Key sections include:
- production areas in Australia and purchasing and receival standards;
- the chemical and physical composition of triticale, with the point being stressed that triticale is primarily used in livestock diets as an energy source and that, compared to wheat and barley, it has a softer grain requiring less mechanical energy to mill;
- specific information on the nutritional quality of triticale for pigs, poultry, ruminants and horses. On feeding pigs, for instance, the author says: "triticale is a high value, consistent quality cereal gr.ain for use in pig diets. It has a high level of digestible energy and there are no restrictions on inclusions in pig diets".
