The race is on to raise protein across WA's 1.2 million ha lupin crop, following the establishment of the 'HiPro' classification and premiums for high protein produce. Through breeding, the GRDC-supported Australian Coordinated Lupin Improvement Program aims to push the protein levels achieved by current varieties reliably above the 34 per cent needed for HiPro classification. Current protein levels waiver between 28 and 36 per cent and are largely driven by genetic and environmental factors. While new varieties are being developed, more immediate benefits could flow from research, with the Department of Agriculture investigating how growers could employ various agronomic strategies to lift protein levels in current varieties.
