With WA's million hectare lupin industry firmly established as the world's largest, the GRDC has appealed to industry to identify another pulse crop for particular research focus in the West. GRDC Western Regional Panel members responsible for crop improvement, Cuballing grower Darrel Dent and consultant Dr Juliann Lloyd-Smith said work would continue with lupins, but the crop was not suited to all WA growing conditions. Panel members said growers needed a second reliable pulse to add to their repertoires. Currently field peas, chickpeas and faba beans loom as the most suitable.
