New front in battle against rust

After last year's paltry 5.1 mullion tonne WA grain harvest, many growers how a resurgent 2003-04 crop will lead to recovery. But as regular soakings give strength to that hope, they also raise the spectre of disease, including an exotic strain of stripe rust which arrived in WA last year. The GRDC has supported collaboration between the WA Department of Agriculture and the Australian Cereal Rust Control Program to fortify WA wheat varieties against these threats. You'll find the full story in our special lift-out on rust in the centre of this Ground cover.
