Opportunity to shape future grains industry

Opportunity to shape future grains industry

The Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) is calling for applications for between five and seven part-time, non-executive directors for terms up to three years.

The GRDC is a joint industry and Australian Government funded statutory corporation which supports the grain industry’s commitment to research, development and innovation.

Current GRDC board member and deputy chair Steve Marshall has a background in food science and technology management and has been serving on the GRDC board for six years.

Mr Marshall says the GRDC’s role is to coordinate and invest in research and development activities for the benefit of all stakeholders in the grains industry and the community at large.

“The GRDC board operates at a strategic level and requires a diverse set of skills to manage the broad range of issues facing the grains industry,” Mr Marshall said.

“Serving on the board is demanding but enormously rewarding in terms of GRDC’s influence on the future direction of Australia’s grains industry which is a major part of the nation’s primary industries.

“Board members travel into the field to interact with growers and researchers several times a year and meet with a range of stakeholders, including government research partners.”

Geoff Budd, GRDC executive manager legal and procurement, says GRDC is seeking candidates who can demonstrate capabilities and expertise in one or more of the following fields:

• Grains production, processing and marketing
• Environmental and ecological matters
• Science and technology
• Technology transfer
• Management and conservation of natural resources
• Economics
• Administration of research and development
• Finance and business management
• Sociology
• Public administration

Mr Budd says all candidates should have an understanding of corporate governance and responsibilities, good communications skills and the capacity to represent GRDC to all stakeholders.

“The selection committee must ensure that the directors of the corporation collectively possess an appropriate balance of expertise in as many of the above fields as possible,” he said.

Remuneration and allowances for directors are prescribed by the Australian Government Remuneration Tribunal and the annual remuneration is currently $30,280.

Applicants are requested to provide a brief CV and description of relevant skills and experience against the above competencies, of no more than three pages, by email to: directorapply@bigpond.com.

Closing date for applications is Friday, 8 July 2011 and interviews are likely to be in the first two weeks of August.
