Port Lincoln, SA
Mark has spent more than 30 years progressing South Australia’s grains industry, so he’s a fitting representative for growers on GRDC’s Southern Regional Panel. He runs a project management business based in Port Lincoln that operates throughout the Eyre Peninsula and beyond.
His significant experience in extension projects with the grains industry is a boon for the panel. The canola industry in SA has particularly benefited from Mark’s efforts in extension programs over the years, during which time he has contributed to the introduction of canola to South Australia and worked on the national TOPCROP program.
Mark has more recently taken an interest in natural resource management and industry sustainability, and is particularly pleased to see the positive response from growers on the Eyre Peninsula to the GRDC’s National Water Use Efficiency Initiative.
He is keen to see more progress in helping growers tackle issues like herbicide resistance, input cost management and growing crops that meet market demands, ultimately making southern region farm businesses more sustainable.
“The most pressing issues are sustainability of our farming systems in relation to herbicide resistance, and input costs, particularly nitrogen. We have a few projects on the Eyre Peninsula that address these issues and certainly the water use efficiency project which has just finished was also well received in the region.”
