Wild radish is a prolific weed affecting winter cropping in Australia’s southern and western cropping regions, but is becoming an increasingly significant problem in northern areas as well.
A Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) sponsored webinar on the topic of ‘The latest research on managing wild radish’ will be held on Tuesday, June 17.
Hosted by ICAN, the webinar is targeted at grain growers and advisers throughout Australia and will be presented by Peter Newman, of the Australian Herbicide Resistance Initiative.
“Mr Newman is based in Geraldton, WA, arguably the home of wild radish in Australia,” ICAN senior consultant Mark Congreve said.
“Wild radish is one of the most competitive and difficult to control broadleaf weeds of winter cereal crops, with weed seeds persisting for many years.
“Traditionally, growers have relied extensively on post-emergent herbicides to control the weed.
“However, wild radish populations have developed resistance to many herbicide modes of action, and many populations of the weed can now tolerate multiple modes of action.
“The recent discovery of glyphosate resistant wild radish in WA and phenoxy resistant individuals in New South Wales has further raised the level of concern.
“This webinar will look at the ecology of wild radish and how to use this information to assist in managing it; its herbicide resistance status; and weed control tactics that have been successfully employed to manage this weed.”
The starting time for the free webinar is: Western Australia: 1pm; South Australia: 2.30pm; and Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria and Tasmania: 3pm.
To participate, use a laptop, tablet or personal computer to watch and listen to a 30 minute presentation, which will be followed by about 15 minutes for questions.
