WA College of Agriculture Year 12 student Roxanne Mostert has been crowned the Agricultural Student of
the Year at the Kondinin Group-ABC Rural Australian Farmer of the Year Awards in Melbourne on Wednesday,
It is the latest gong for the promising youngster, who was also the 2014 recipient of the WA AgLinkEd
Scholarship at last year’s Royal Agricultural Show in Perth.
At the 2013 Western Australian College of Agriculture graduation ceremony she also received the Year 11
Agricultural Education Scholarship on behalf of the Royal Agricultural Society of Western Australia.
Roxanne is currently completing her second year at the Denmark college, and Kondinin Group general
manager Stephanie Shepherdson said Roxanne was worthy of the award, which was sponsored by GRDC.
“The newly listed category of Agricultural Student of the Year was bursting with nominations,” Ms
“With over 35 nationally completed nominations, from students in years 11 and 12 we were blown away with
the attention this was given.
“It was a proud moment to select Roxanne Mostert was our first winner for this award and to know that
Australian Agriculture has such amazing talents budding for the future.”
Roxanne, who is College Captain and Year 12 prefect, said she was most enthusiastic towards courses related
to agriculture, in particular Animal Production Systems, Plant Production Systems and the Certificate II in
“My passion for animal production systems has led to my considerations of studying animal science at
Murdoch University in 2015, however I also find Curtin’s Agribusiness course appealing as I enjoy the profit
both plant and animal science can have within Australia’s agriculture economy,” Roxanne said.
“On the home dairy farm I involve myself with the fodder care programs, veterinary checks, animal health
monitoring, and business management which has helped me gain a great deal of understanding about
various aspects of an agricultural enterprise.
“Additionally, I spent one week at the Mount Barker Veterinary Hospital in 2011, working alongside the
veterinarian gaining work experience.
“This broadened my view and provided me with valuable experience as to what is involved with becoming
and practicing as a veterinarian.”
She has participated in various agricultural shows across WA since a young age, including the 2013 Perth Royal Show,
while she managed a second place in the Open category in Merino judging at the Wagin Woolarama.
Roxanne believes receiving the award was a huge honour, and one which would motivate her on to bigger and better
“Winning this award does not stand merely as a sense of personal achievement and accomplishment, but it is a
source of great encouragement and improved wellbeing for the entire agricultural community,” Roxanne said.
“Through such an award I feel I will be able to demonstrate to senior agriculturalists that there are young people
interested and passionate about the industry.”
