New chickpea hatched in bid to beat ascochyta blight
A new high-yielding, disease-resistant desi chickpea variety suited to New South Wales is being launched this spring after six years of rigorous field testing.
The new Pulse Breeding Australia variety, PBA Boundary , offers increased ascochyta blight resistance over PBA HatTrick , but less resistance than PBA Slasher . PBA Boundary has a tall, erect plant type with excellent harvestability which can be grown in southern NSW, as well as northern NSW and southern Queensland.
PBA Boundary is broadly adapted to these regions and has shown a consistent and significant yield advantage over recently released desi varieties in northern Australia. In southern NSW, PBA Boundary has a five per cent higher yield than PBA HatTrick but is lower yielding than PBA Slasher . PBA Boundary is suitable for growers where good harvestability is a key criterion for their variety selection.
Development of the variety – which will be available through PBA’s desi chickpea commercial partner Seednet for the 2012 growing season – is supported by growers and the Australian Government through the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) and PBA partner agencies.
GRDC manager pulse/oilseed breeding Brondwen MacLean said the new chickpea had consistently out-yielded current commercial varieties by two to nine per cent in northern PBA and National Variety Trials (NVT) since 2006.
“It is ideally suited to deep-sowing in zero-till farming systems allowing farmers to optimise their use of soil moisture,” Ms MacLean said.
PBA Boundary is a standard ‘Indian’ type desi chickpea and has been assessed as suitable for both splitting and direct consumption use by traders in India and the Middle East. It has excellent milling quality.
GRDC southern regional panel acting chair, Peter Schwarz, says ascochyta blight of chickpeas has been a widespread and devastating disease in southern Australia and is a major limitation to overcome when growing this crop unless resistant varieties are used.
“This new variety will provide growers in southern NSW with an important low disease risk tool and will enhance their crop rotation and income-producing options,” Mr Schwarz said.
Pulse Breeding Australia is a world-class Australian breeding program for chickpeas, field peas, faba beans, lentils and lupins, providing growers with varieties that achieve higher yields, have resistance to major diseases and stresses, and have grain qualities that enhance market competitiveness.
“PBA’s vision is to see pulses expand to 15-20% of the cropping area so as to underpin the productivity, profitability and sustainability of our grain farming systems,” Mr Schwarz said.
The new chickpea is being launched at specific pulse field days this spring, giving growers and advisers the opportunity to view and assess the variety in their local districts prior to its availability next season.
The main field day for PBA Boundary in southern NSW will be the Yenda pulse field day near Griffith on October 7.
A variety brochure will also be available for the new chickpea. This package is a compilation of extensive agronomic and disease management projects undertaken by pulse agronomy and pathology research projects which are funded by GRDC in conjunction with the PBA partner agencies, combined with yield data from variety trials conducted by both PBA and National Variety Trials (NVT).
