New member of the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) northern panel, Jules Dixon, knows better than most how valuable research is to the grains industry.
Mrs Dixon is manager of research at AMPS Agribusiness Group, a vertically integrated grains business, and said dealing with research every day meant she had a thorough appreciation of the work being funded through GRDC and how vital it was to the profitability of grain growers.
Mrs Dixon, who grew on a farm in the Liverpool Plains, is now looking forward to being able to use her knowledge of the industry, along with her knowledge of the private sector, to benefit all northern region growers.
“As a northern panellist we have got a unique opportunity to sit in the middle between GRDC executives and growers and that enables us to be the conduit of communication between the two of them,” Mrs Dixon said.
“We are like the linchpin in the middle that helps steer the direction of research and we can communicate the outcomes, as well as be a voice for growers in representing what is required for the north.
“The area I would like to focus on in my term on the panel is in the area of research strategy, particularly in the three-to-eight-year strategy and the 10-year-plus strategy investment for the north,” she said.
Mrs Dixon said she believed that crop nutrition remained a key for unlocking profitability to the future for growers in northern NSW.
“Research in nutrition has such a complex nature and offers great opportunity for the north in the future,” she said.
Mrs Dixon said the GRDC northern panel had a fantastic mix of growers, researchers and consultant agronomists, and was thrilled to be involved.
“There are a significant number of agronomists on this panel which gives us the ability to look both at a technical resource and the ability to understand research needs and also have the opportunity to represent a large proportion of growers,” she said.
