Wimmera  grain growers will soon be putting in place their plans for the 2013 cropping season.

To assist growers with their preparations and considerations, the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) will host a grains research Update at Marnoo next month.

To be held at the Wallaloo Golf Club on February 8, the Update will feature a line-up of expert speakers from throughout Australia who will tackle topics of most relevance to growers in the region.

Horsham-based GRDC Southern Regional Panel member Susan Findlay Tickner says the Update will equip growers with advice and information to enable them to adopt the latest farming practices.

“New thinking is constantly emerging from GRDC-funded research so it is important that we convey that intelligence to those who need it most – our grain growers,” Mrs Findlay Tickner said.

“Sam Kleeman from the University of Adelaide will offer new insights into pre-emergent herbicides and crop safety, as well as how disc seeders can be set up to minimise crop damage.

“CSIRO Plant Industry researcher James Hunt will discuss sowing dates and how growers can get the best out of current wheat varieties, while David Lamb from the University of New England will explore the impacts of new and emerging technology on farm management and crop husbandry,” Mrs Findlay Tickner said.

New tools and guides for management of blackleg and sclerotinia in canola will be addressed by Steve Marcroft of Grains Pathology, University of Adelaide’s Chris Preston will look at developments in pre-emergent herbicides and new research into herbicide resistance, while farmer Robert Matthews will outline new summer weed detection technology.

Enhancing mental and emotional resilience is to be the subject of a presentation by Dennis Hoiberg of Lessons Learnt Consulting.

Supported by BCG (Birchip Cropping Group), the Update will be from 9am (registration starts at 8.15am) to 1pm, with lunch provided.
