An understanding of the various factors that combine to drive cost effective spray timing will be a key focus for farm advisers attending a practical cereal foliar disease workshop in Temora. The Grains Research and Development Corporation-supported two-day workshop in March will discuss the cutting edge of cereal disease management, enabling advisers to pass on the latest knowledge and insights to their grain-growing clients. The Cereal Foliar Disease Management Workshop for farm advisers, to be held on March 11-12 at the Temora Ex Services Memorial Club, will be led by foliar disease expert Nick Poole, from the Foundation for Arable Research in New Zealand. Leading plant pathologists Robert Park (University of Sydney Plant Breeding Institute), Greg Platz (Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry) and Andrew Milgate (NSW DPI), will also be at the workshop to discuss with participants the regional agronomic issues of most importance. The small group workshop will cover issues including: relating cereal growth stages and disease epidemiology to spray decisions; using stem dissection to identify when key leaves for protection are emerging; the impact of environment and day degrees on crop and disease development; understanding where new and old fungicides fit; and identifying key intervention points for disease management in cereals. The workshop, supported by GRDC and the Rust Bust campaign, is locally sponsored by BASF and Bayer CropScience.
