Cropping issues of most concern to grain growers in the South-East will be dissected and discussed at a grains research forum in Naracoorte later this month.
Building soil organic matter, fungicide management, spray tank chemistry, slug control and nitrogen use are among the topics on the agenda at the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) grains research Update on August 27 at the Naracoorte Town Hall.
GRDC Southern Regional Panel member Richard Konzag, of Mallala, says the half-day program will be of enormous appeal to the region’s grain growers.
“The Update will feature a line-up of expert speakers from throughout Australia and beyond, and they will be addressing challenges and opportunities confronting local growers,” Mr Konzag said.
The Update will feature a presentation by Harm van Rees, from Cropfacts Pty Ltd, on stubble retention and the use of nutrients to build soil organic matter. Mr van Rees will bust some myths around building humus and organic matter and he will outline the latest research into the role of nutrients to break down stubble.
Nick Poole from FAR Australia will discuss fungicide management and timing, looking at canopy and fungicide management for cereals in the high rainfall zone, and strategies growers can employ to maintain green leaf area and maximise yield potential.
Rob Buttimore of Dow AgroSciences, New Zealand, will offer simple and effective tips on understanding the chemistry within the spray tank and how to avoid it all going wrong.
Best slug management practices will be explored by Jon Midwood from Southern Farming Systems, who will also relay key learnings from his visit to the United Kingdom’s ‘Cereals 2014’ Expo in June this year.
Rob Norton from the International Plant Nutrition Institute will discuss nitrogen product, placement and timing and how to get the combination of all three right. He will also outline how to use and calculate nitrogen use benchmarks.
Duan Williams from MacKillop Farm Management Group (MFMG) will lead a discussion on the future shape of the Group and the challenge of attracting the next generation of members.
Supported by MFMG and Grain Producers SA, the forum will be from 9am to 1pm with morning tea and lunch provided. For a detailed program and to register, visit www.orm.com.au or www.grdc.com.au/updatedates or contact ORM on 03 5444 4299 or email email@example.com
