Australian and international experts with an interest in biological nitrogen (N) fixation will soon converge on Adelaide (South Australia).
The 17th Australian Nitrogen Fixation Conference, from September 28 to October 2, will be based at the Plant Research Centre at the Waite Precinct, Urrbrae, and will include a field tour to the Mid North of SA.
Conference organising committee member Dr Maarten Ryder, from the University of Adelaide, says the event will be attended by members of the research community from across the globe.
“This forum will enable people to come together to discuss the latest research across a broad spectrum – from what is coming out of laboratories to what is being applied at a farm level,” Dr Ryder said.
“A lot of exciting new research is happening in the area of rhizobium and nitrogen fixation systems so this conference will be of great value to anyone with an interest in this field.”
The conference is being co-hosted by the Australian Society for Nitrogen Fixation, the University of Adelaide and the SA Research and Development Institute and sponsored by the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC), the AW Howard Memorial Trust, the SA Grain Industry Trust, BASF Agricultural Specialties and Novozymes Biologicals Australia.
The theme of the event is “N2 fixation: reaping the benefits of basic and applied research”, and keynote speakers include:
- Professor Barbara Reinhold-Hurek, Head of the Department of Microbe-Plant Interactions at the University of Bremen, Germany, who will speak on molecular plant-bacteria interactions;
- Dr Euan James, from The James Hutton Institute, Dundee, Scotland, whose topic will be plant electron microscopy and N fixation;
- Dr Michael Russelle from the United States Dairy Forage Research Centre, who will discuss legumes and N management on-farm.
