The need for new technology solutions to provide high speed internet and better communications to Australian farmers is an issue that Jock Graham of Coolac in New South Wales takes very seriously.
In fact, Mr Graham will be dedicating a great deal of his time over the next year researching this issue as part of a prestigious Grains Research and Development Corporation-sponsored Nuffield Scholarship.
“I’m very grateful to the GRDC for giving me the opportunity to conduct the research into communications infrastructure on farms, particularly looking at how to get high speed internet to rural users to improve business and farming operations,” Mr Graham said.
“Finding information, running equipment, trading and marketing all involve access and communication, which is currently a challenge throughout farm businesses in rural Australia.”
As part of the scholarship, Mr Graham will visit China, Singapore, the Philippines, Canada, Ireland and the USA on a group tour, visiting agribusinesses and meeting with global representatives in the agriculture industry.
“The GRDC is enabling me as a southern mixed farmer to see the world and bring best farming practices back to Australia,” he added.
Mr Graham works within his family’s mixed farming enterprise and is managing director of a start-up farm software company, Farm Apps, which makes software for smartphones to enhance farmer efficiency.
Kathleen Allan, GRDC Program Manager Capacity Building, said Mr Graham was one of four recipients of GRDC-sponsored Nuffield Scholarships for 2015.
“At the GRDC, we see capacity building as vital to ensure future leaders in our industry have the right training, skills and opportunities. The Nuffield Scholarship program is a wonderful initiative that fosters leadership attributes and innovative thinking and so the GRDC continues to be very supportive of the program.”
