Key personnel from the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) will tour Western Australia’s northern cropping districts to meet with growers and discuss their agronomic and production challenges.
GRDC chairman Richard Clark, western panellists including panel chairman Peter Roberts and staff including GRDC research programs executive manager Brondwen MacLean will consult local growers from October 1 to 3.
“Meetings with growers, researchers, advisers and other grains industry representatives will take place in districts including Mingenew, Morawa, Coorow, Moora, New Norcia, Yerecoin/Piawaning, Calingiri and Bolgart,” Mr Roberts said.
“This tour is one of three separate GRDC western panel spring tours being conducted in WA this year, in order to maximise geographical coverage and to ensure we meet with as many growers as possible.”
A tour of WA’s southern cropping regions was held from September 8 to 10, and a tour of the State’s eastern grainbelt is taking place from September 22 to 24.
Mr Roberts said ongoing, direct consultation with growers was vital in order for the GRDC to refine its western research priorities and the annual spring tours were a particularly important way of achieving this.
“Feedback from growers helps the panel – comprised of growers and other representatives of WA’s grain industry - ensure that all research hits the paddock and provides the best possible return to growers,” he said.
Mr Roberts said that as well as allowing panellists to hear first-hand about grower production issues, the GRDC western regional panel spring tours provided growers with an opportunity to ask questions about the GRDC and its investments.
“At the conclusion of the three western tours, panel members will come together to discuss their observations, findings and suggested actions,” he said.
