Reader-friendly summaries of current Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) investment projects are now available online.

Each year the GRDC invests millions of dollars in research, development, skills and capacity building projects, and a new overview of these investments summarises projects active in 2013/2014.

The summaries outlining projects designed to help drive the production capacity and profitability of Australian growers can be found at www.grdc.com.au/ProjectSummaries.

GRDC western regional panel chairman Peter Roberts said the resources were intended to communicate current research investments in a brief but useful way.

They summarise the scope, aims and targeted region of each individual research project currently funded by the GRDC as well as providing contact details for the relevant researchers,” he said.

“Contained within six volumes and comprising a total of more than 700 pages, the summaries have been written by research partners and cover six key themes – meeting market requirements, improving crop yield, protecting your crop, advancing profitable farming systems, improving your farm resource base and building skills and capacity.”

Mr Roberts said the summaries were an important new way of raising awareness among growers, advisers and industry stakeholders of the extent and focus of existing GRDC investments.

“Communication with growers and stakeholders helps the GRDC fine-tune its research investments to ensure that research that ‘hits the paddock’ and delivers the best possible outcomes to growers,” he said.

“In the western region, feedback helps the GRDC western regional panel and Regional Cropping Solutions Networks (RCSNs) to prioritise investment to ensure that growers have early access to locally-relevant technologies, tools and information.

“The GRDC will continue to invest in areas that can help drive profitability improvements for western region growers such as frost, weeds and herbicide resistance management, break crops and soil constraints such as non-wetting soils.

“However, continued feedback is vital to enable the GRDC to respond in a timely way to important grain production issues, and I encourage people to read the project summaries and direct any feedback to the GRDC via feedback@grdc.com.au.”

The project summaries add to existing GRDC communication products such as the five-year Strategic Research and Development Plan, the Annual Operating Plan, the Annual Report and the Growers Report which summarise the research and development portfolio.

Together these communication products provide a detailed path forward for the national grains industry, offering information on the full suite of projects which command more than $140 million in funding.
