General Manager, Applied R & D


As one of the world's leading grains research organisations, the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) plays an integral role in driving research outcomes and innovation that directly benefit Australia's grain industry. The GRDC's purpose is to invest in research, development and extension (RD&E) to create enduring profitability for Australian grain growers.

GRDC is seeking a dynamic and collaborative executive level General Manager, responsible for the management and leadership of the Applied R&D business group (AR&D). AR&D is responsible for developing and implementing strategy and investment programs for the discipline areas of crop protection, biosecurity and regulation, agronomy, farming systems, soils and nutrition. Ideally the GM will have extensive experience across one or more of these discipline areas, with a view to enabling GRDC to deliver on its purpose of “Investing in RD&E to create enduring profitability for Australian grain growers”.

The GM will have a consultative approach and be an integral member of the GRDC Executive responsible for the strategic leadership of the organisation and (on a rotating basis) a member of a regional panel, with key responsibilities being:

  • Leadership of staff, budgets and activities associated with the Applied R&D Business Group
  • Providing high-level strategic advice to the MD, Executive and Board relating to GRDC delivering on its purpose
  • Developing and maintaining strong working relationships with current and prospective domestic and international public and private research partners

The GM will be experienced in delivering large scale projects in a complex environment with multiple stakeholders, including the motivation and management of a team driven to deliver innovative solutions for Australian Grain Growers and leadership and management of staff. In addition, they will be able to demonstrate an ability to build relationships and collaborate nationally and internationally with both public and private research partners, along with well-developed commercial and financial acumen. It is assumed the successful applicant will have relevant post-graduate qualifications.
