GRDC Summer Fallow Herbicide Workshop – Booleroo Centre

Event Name
GRDC Summer Fallow Herbicide Workshop – Booleroo Centre
Start Date
End Date
Duration
6 hours and 45 minutes
Description

Fallow herbicide application under summer conditions can be particularly challenging. Environmental conditions are often not conducive for optimum herbicide uptake, which can often result in reduced levels of control. Optimising summer herbicide decision making in 2022 will be even more critical than ever with the expected shortage of many fallow herbicides.

GRDC are supporting a series of fallow herbicide workshops for growers and agronomists that will be delivered by Mark Congreve from ICAN. These workshops will go into the science underpinning how herbicides work and how this drives decision making, product selection and application practices for summer spraying across the mid-north SA and Mallee farming systems.

Knowing what weeds will be controlled from a herbicide application is the easy bit – it’s on the label.

More challenging questions that we will cover in the workshop include:

  • Why weeds that are adapted to growing over summer are often more difficult to control with knockdown herbicides
  • The impact of environmental conditions on herbicide uptake & translocation
  • Water quality and water conditioners
  • Do we need to add extra adjuvant? When, where and why?
  • Optimal spray quality, water volume and nozzle selection for different herbicides
  • Reducing spray drift
  • Tank mixing – friend or foe?

Additionally, we will discuss how emerging resistance to knockdown herbicides means that we may longer be able to ‘get away with’ some practices and mixtures that have been standard practice in the past on ‘susceptible’ populations.
