GRDC Herbicide Behaviour Workshop (Ayr)

A thorough understanding of how herbicides work assists users to maximise herbicide performance. When confronted with a range of weed problems and environmental conditions, the challenge is to optimise the results in the field.

Knowing what weeds will be controlled from a herbicide application is the easy bit – it’s on the label.

More challenging questions include:

• Why do herbicides perform or fail in some situations?
• Critical comments on the label. Why do they exist and how were they developed?
• How do adjuvants and water conditioning agents work? What should be used, when and why?
• How do environmental conditions affect different herbicides?
• How does resistance affect different herbicides?
• How do residual herbicides work and what influences their breakdown?

ICAN is delivering this series of GRDC supported workshops targeted to advisers, agronomists and farm managers which go into the science underpinning how herbicides work. Participants will leave with a better understanding of the key factors dictating herbicide performance and what can be done in the paddock to ensure weed control is maximised.

For North Queensland, the workshops will be customised to focus on herbicides and management issues in the soybean / peanut / maize / cane systems, with the day covering:

• How herbicides work – disruption of key enzyme systems within the plant
• Leaf entry of post-emergent herbicides. Including the influence of environmental conditions and the importance of adjuvants
• Post-emergent herbicide translocation and metabolism
• Antagonism and synergy when making tank mixes
• Relationship between pre-emergent herbicides and the prevailing soil type, trash load and environmental conditions that influence both efficacy and off-target movement
• Delaying herbicide resistance
• Maximising performance of each of the key modes of action (MOA's)

These small group workshops will be a full day workshop, commencing at 8.30am. Numbers are limited to ensure active participation and discussion.

Previous workshops have regularly ‘sold-out’, so early registration is essential. As we will be operating under Covid-safe guidelines, registration is essential and will not be able to accept walk-ins on the day.

While the workshop content is targeted to experienced agronomists, interested farm managers are also welcome to register.

Cost is $100 (GST inclusive) per workshop.
