Grain growers to gather for industry forum in Corowa

Key points:

• GRDC/Riverine Plains Grower Update to be held at Corowa on February 17
• Focus on seasonal issues and grains industry developments

Growers from throughout the Riverina region will gather at Corowa on February 17 for an important grains industry forum.

The Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC)/Riverine Plains Inc Grower Update at the Corowa RSL Club will provide producers with the latest information on seasonal and industry issues and research developments.

“The GRDC and Riverine Plains Inc are hosting this event to present growers with practical advice on how to make the most out of their farming systems,” said GRDC Southern Regional Panel chair David Shannon.

“The information being presented will relate to the wet weather issues encountered towards the end of the 2010 growing season and throughout harvest and what impact those conditions will have on 2011 cropping programs,” Mr Shannon said.

“I encourage all growers in the southern Riverina and north-east Victoria regions to get along to the forum which will provide plenty of food for thought as they deal with current circumstances and start to prepare for the season ahead,” Mr Shannon said.

Among the speakers will be Ron Storey from Storey Marketing Services who will discuss national and global grains trends, including markets for key grains, shifts in market fundamentals and growers’ changing attitudes to marketing.

Dr Chris Preston from the University of Adelaide will speak about the glyphosate resistance threat and the latest herbicide management tools available, while authorities from I&I NSW will provide growers with the insights into cereal diseases and grains and oilseeds varieties and agronomic developments.

A comparison of longer-term seeding systems will be the topic of a presentation by Lachlan Caldwell from Lachlan Fertilisers at Forbes, while GRDC-funded research being undertaken in southern NSW and north-east Victoria by the Riverine Plains Inc farmer group will also be outlined during the day.
