Naracoorte grains forum to tackle hot crop topics

Key points:

• GRDC Grower Update to be held at Naracoorte on August 23
• Focus on seasonal issues and grains research developments

Grain growers throughout South Australia’s South-East will gather in Naracoorte this month to discuss regional agronomic issues and to equip themselves for the remainder of the crop growing season and the coming harvest.

The Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC), supported by MacKillop Farm Management Group and the SA Farmers Federation, is hosting a research Update for growers on August 23 at the Naracoorte Town Hall.

GRDC Southern Regional Panel chair David Shannon says the Update will be an important forum for discussing and analysing cropping issues and for assisting growers in their endeavours to maximise potential from their enterprises.

“The GRDC research Updates are of enormous value to growers looking for practical advice on how to improve their farming systems and increase their environmental and economic sustainability,” Mr Shannon said.

“The Update in Naracoorte will feature a line-up of expert speakers from throughout Australia who will provide information and insights of relevance to growers in the region.”

In the wake of a sporadic and weather interrupted harvest last year, Tony Craddock from Rural Directions and Lucindale grain grower Lachie Seears will discuss the drivers of harvest efficiency and will analyse the options available to growers to improve their efficiency at harvest time.

Integrating livestock and cropping in a high rainfall zone will be the subject of a presentation by Nuffield Scholar and Gippsland (Victoria) grain grower, Rowan Paulet, while Melbourne University’s Dr Michael Nash will provide an overview of current research into slugs and snails and the options available for control of these crop pests.

With grain growers facing the worst cereal disease risk in nearly 40 years, Dr Hugh Wallwork from the SA Research and Development Institute will outline how to deal with emerging disease threats, particularly cereal rusts.

The day will conclude will a presentation by Dennis Hoiberg from Lessons Learnt Consulting on developing personal resilience for times both good and bad.

Mr Shannon said he encouraged all growers in the region to take time out from their on-farm activities to attend the forum to learn of the latest in grains research and industry developments and for the opportunity to discuss issues of most importance to them.

The Update will be from 9am to 1pm (registration starts at 8.25am) at the Naracoorte Town Hall in Smith Street. Growers wishing to attend can now register for the Update online via
