Improving crop productivity and profitability was the overarching theme of this week’s Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) Grains Research Update at Jondaryan Woolshed.

Andrew Speed, Vanderfield, Toowoomba, caught up with Wayne Postle, Pioneer and Nick Park, Pursehouse Pittsworth on arrival at the GRDC Update at Jondaryan.

The Update attracted more than 170 growers and industry representatives from across the Darling Downs, making it one of the largest one-day GRDC Updates ever hosted in Queensland.

On the discussion table were key industry research projects in areas such as farming system performance, summer pulse agronomy, crop disease management, herbicide resistance, deep phosphorus applications and insect pest management.

Among the impressive line-up of speakers were CSIRO Senior Farming Systems Scientist Dr Lindsay Bell, Department of Agriculture and Fisheries (DAF) research agronomist Kerrie McKenzie, University of Southern Queensland pathologist Jo White, renowned DAF entomologists Melina Miles and Hugh Brier, DAF principal research scientist Dr Michael Widderick, Bongeen grower John Cameron, DAF principal pathologist Greg Platz and DAF food technologist Ross Naidoo.

Macalister grain grower and GRDC northern panel member Rob Taylor, Curraweena, said the Updates provided an ideal forum for direct interaction between growers, agronomists and researchers to foster an understanding of current research programs, on-going research needs and `in the paddock’ experiences.

“The presentations were interesting, engaging and raised some valuable questions from the audience in terms of how the science can be best applied in a practical, commercial situation,” Mr Taylor said.

“This type of interaction is critical to ensuring that our industry research and extension programs are meaningful and help deliver more profitable production options for northern region growers.”
