GRDC helps growers tackle winter weeds

The Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) will help growers and advisors tackle the challenge of winter weed control next month through a series of informative webinars.

The first of the GRDC Advances in Weed Management webinars will focus on the ecology and management of wild oats and is being held on Thursday June 16 at 8:30am.

Wild oats poses an ongoing problem for growers across New South Wales and Queensland. While growers who have focused on elimination of seed returning to the soil have been successful in driving down the seedbank and reducing populations, widespread resistance to a range of post-emergent herbicides is now making control difficult in many paddocks.

This webinar will continue to build on the library of previous GRDC webinars focusing on key problem weeds and will cover the ecology of wild oats, the latest on herbicide resistance and discuss how this information can be used to develop effective management strategies.

The second webinar will address the performance of glyphosate and the role different salts and adjuvants play, and is being held on Thursday June 23 at 8:30am.

Consultant Andrew Somervaille who has been conducting field trials with glyphosate since its introduction in Australia will join the webinar to explain the different glyphosate salts and how they enter the leaf; behaviour in the spray tank and which adjuvant system is preferred for each formulation.

Webinars are free of charge however participants will be required to pre-register to receive a link to the webinar software.
