Westmar crop and pasture nutrition field day
Author: Toni Somes | Date: 11 Apr 2017
The field day to be held at Westmar grain grower Phillip Coggan’s property, Enarra, will offer locals an opportunity to discuss nutrient strategies with some of the industry’s most highly regarded soil specialists.
Supported by the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) as part of the More Profit from Crop Nutrition Project the field day will be set in pasture paddocks and soil pits offering an interactive question and answer setting for attendees.
Well-known researcher, Professor Mike Bell from the Queensland Alliance for Agriculture and Food Innovation (QAAFI) and research scientist David Lester from the Queensland Department of Agriculture and Fisheries (DAF) will explain how roots acquire nutrients and what the critical nutrient levels are for crop response in local soils.
They will also look at how nutrients move in the soil profile and how, when and where growers should apply them.
DAF agronomists Kerry McKenzie and Gavin Peck will focus on pastures and what different pastures need, and how often growers need to apply nutrients to make money.
While industry consultant Chris Dowling from Back Paddock Consulting will also be on site discussing liquid fertilisers and the best product fit for grain enterprises.
Field day organiser and QDAF soil scientist Kaara Klepper said the event was an invaluable opportunity for the region’s grain growers to bring their questions and concerns directly to industry experts.
“In our experience growers really value the chance to hear directly from those scientists working on soil nutrient research,” Dr Klepper said.
“Field days like this also provide researchers with a forum to see and hear how their work is impacting growers’ productivity and profitability. So, offering the two groups a chance to connect is an important part of the research, development and extension cycle.”
The Westmar Crop and Pasture Nutrition Field Day will be held on April 20 from 7am to 11am at Enarra, 20km north of Westmar on the Meandarra-Talwood Road. Breakfast and morning tea will be provided.
