Crop rotation insight at Westmar GRDC Updates

Author: Ellen McNamara | Date: 12 Jul 2017

Western Downs region grain growers will be offered insights into how crop rotations compare for risk, profit and system benefit as part of the Grains Research Development Corporation (GRDC) Update in Westmar this month.

The annual one-day update is being held at the Westmar Sports Club on Tuesday 18 July.

Simon Fritsch of AgriPath will walk growers through crop choices, frequencies and sequencing as well as yield, price and gross margin relationships and the value of rotation for the management of soil water, nutrition, weeds and disease.

Lawrie Price from the Northern Grower Alliance will offer some practical strategies for problem weeds in the region, including glyphosate resistant barnyard, liverseed grass and sowthistle, Group A resistant wild oats and feathertop Rhodes grass.

As well, Philip Burrill from Queensland Department of Agriculture and Fisheries will present new data on venting after phosphine fumigations to help ensure grain isn’t rejected at the silo.

Other topics on the Update’s agenda include: tillage impacts in no till systems on crop growth, soil water and compaction, advances in sowing equipment and mapping, and managing farm layout, planning and laser levelling.

GRDC Senior Regional Manager North Jan Edwards said the annual Updates were designed to provide growers with practical, relevant information in response to ongoing and emerging on-farm challenges.

“The GRDC is committed to providing growers and their advisers with best practice advice that enhances productivity, and offers efficient, cost effective guides for the use of inputs, as well as for management and control of weed, disease and pest issues,” she said.

The Westmar Update will be at the Westmar Sports Club on Tuesday July 18. Registration is at 8:30 for a 9am start. The cost is $30pp ($20 for subsequent people from same farm) and registration is advised to ensure catering.
