GRDC panel to canvass regional grains research priorities

Grain growers’ research priorities and local industry issues are about to be brought to the immediate attention of the Grains Research and Development Corporation’s Southern Regional Panel.
Panel members will be travelling throughout southern New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia during their annual spring tour of growers’ properties, research facilities and trial sites. They will also be meeting with farming systems groups, researchers and farm advisers.
The tour, from Monday, September 3, to Friday, September 7, will provide panel members with critical insights into the research, development and extension needs and requirements of the southern cropping industry.
Panel chair David Shannon said the annual spring tour was one of the most important activities undertaken by the panel.
“During the tour we will meet with farming systems groups and grain growers in the field, which will provide panel members with an intimate understanding of local issues, allowing us to determine future research priorities.
“We will also be assessing first-hand the impact and relevance of GRDC-funded research and development in the regions.
“As the conduit for growers, it is important for the panel to be on the ground talking directly to grain producers so we can ensure future research is directed at making the biggest impact possible for them on-farm,” Mr Shannon said.
For the first time, the panel will be split into three separate touring parties to maximise geographical coverage and stakeholder contact during the week.
Each touring group will focus on a designated agroecological zone: low rainfall zone; medium rainfall zone; and high rainfall zone/irrigation.
The low rainfall zone tour will comprise visits to: (Victoria) Mildura, The Millewa, Ouyen, Chinkapook; (SA) Lameroo, Karoonda, Loxton; (NSW) Narrandera, Yanco, Griffith, Rankins Springs, Goolgowi, Merriwagga and Condobolin.
The medium rainfall zone tour will comprise visits to: (NSW) Orange, Manildra, Cudal, Canowindra, Forbes, Temora, Illabo, Wagga Wagga, Daysdale; (Victoria) Yarrawonga.
The high rainfall zone/irrigation tour will comprise visits to: (SA) Kangaroo Island, Naracoorte, Bool Lagoon, Penola; (Victoria) Hamilton, Dunkeld, Lake Bolac, Westmere, Bendigo, Congupna; (NSW) Finley.
The itineraries for this year’s panel tour have involved considerable input from GRDC’s newly-appointed Regional Cropping Solutions facilitators, who will also travel with panel members throughout the regions.
