GRDC Southern Regional Panel chair David Shannon says the Farm Business Update is the first of its kind to be held in the Western District

The Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) is hosting a special forum in Hamilton this month to help grain growers in their quest to develop a greater understanding and appreciation of the many facets of farm business management.

The Farm Business Management Update on September 26 will feature a line-up of expert speakers who will offer growers insights into some of the key farm business issues.

GRDC Southern Regional Panel chair David Shannon says the Update is the first of its kind to be held in the Western District.

"The GRDC has embarked on a new initiative aimed at increasing grower and rural adviser capacity in farm business management through various platforms.

"We recognise just how important it is for growers and other grains industry professionals to have access to valuable information and resources to support them in their business decision-making.

"Farm business management is a vital aspect of grain growing that can have a direct influence on increasing farm-gate returns."

Farm Business Management Updates for growers have been held in a number of locations throughout the southern cropping region in recent months.

Mr Shannon said the feedback from those attending had been overwhelmingly positive.

Naracoorte (SA) consultant and former farmer Ken Solly recently attended the Update at Pinnaroo, stating that it was "a top class event".

"It was one of the best days of learning and reflection that I have had for a long time," Mr Solly said.

"One thing is for sure, the attendees received a high quality learning experience and hats off to the GRDC for bringing such a talented group of speakers to country South Australia.

"I think these Farm Business Updates are great use of growers' levies."

The Farm Business Update at Hamilton will begin with Phil O'Callaghan from ORM, Bendigo, delving into the influences on cost of production and enterprise risks.

The options and issues associated with trends in farm labour will be detailed by Ballarat-based consultant Frank Delahunty, while Brad Knight of AgFarm will explore the challenges that impact on effective grain marketing decision-making.

John Francis from Holmes Sackett will provide his thoughts on the options for farm expansion and how these can be analysed, and with new technology being taken up at a rapid rate by the agricultural sector, Pru Cook from DPI Victoria will take a look at applications that can assist growers on the farm.

The day will conclude with Adrian Calvano from the National Centre for Farmers Health addressing the issue of health and wellbeing down on the farm.

Mr Shannon said facilitated question and answer discussions would also be conducted during the Update.

"The Farm Business Management Updates are a great opportunity for growers to discuss those aspects of their farm operation that are taking on greater significance these days so I urge all growers to get along to this event."

The Update will be held at the Hamilton Racing Club, from 9am to 3.30pm.
