Riverina grain growers are being encouraged to turn their attention to the farm business management side of their operations.

The Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) is hosting a special forum this month at Lockhart to help growers in their quest to develop a greater understanding and appreciation of the many facets of managing a farm business.

The Farm Business Update on March 21 at the Lockhart Ex-Servicemen’s Club will feature a line-up of expert speakers who will offer growers insights into some of the key farm business issues.

GRDC Southern Regional Panel chair David Shannon says the GRDC’s Farm Business Updates are aimed at increasing grower understanding of and capacity in farm business management, which is a critical part of their grain-production enterprises.

“There is so much more to farming than sowing and harvesting crops. Business decision-making also has a direct influence on increasing farm-gate returns.”

Mr Shannon said the Farm Business Updates were a relatively new GRDC initiative, but already the feedback from those who attended last year’s inaugural events had been overwhelmingly positive.

“The Farm Business Updates are a great opportunity for growers to discuss those aspects of their farm operation that are taking on greater significance these days so I urge all growers to get along to this event,” Mr Shannon said.

The Update at Lockhart will open with John Francis from Holmes Sackett analysing the options for farm expansion and how these can be compared to determine future directions.

Mark Harris of Rural Management Strategies will discuss the impact of changing sheep prices on the incorporation of livestock into cropping systems, while extracting maximum value from modern machinery will be the topic of a presentation by Nuffield Scholar Bruce Thompson.

Phil O’Callaghan from ORM Consulting will explore the opportunities available for growers to convert advice into profit, and 3D Ag’s Peter McInerney will tackle the costs, benefits, impacts and opportunities that nitrogen and pulses can offer cropping systems.

The day will conclude with Dennis Hoiberg from Lessons Learnt Consulting discussing the practical strategies growers can employ to enhance their resilience.

The Farm Business Update, supported by FarmLink Research, will run from 9am to 3.30pm and includes lunch.
