Many facets of farm business management in focus at Dookie

Keith Pengilley

The Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) is hosting a special forum in Dookie next month to help grain growers in their quest to develop a greater understanding and appreciation of the many facets of managing a farm business.

GRDC Southern Regional Panel chair Keith Pengilley says the Farm Business Update on September 10 will feature a line-up of expert speakers who will offer insights and practical strategies to assist growers in building and maintaining successful farm enterprises.

“The GRDC’s Farm Business Updates are aimed at increasing grower and adviser understanding of and capacity in farm business management, which is a critical part of any farming enterprise,” Mr Pengilley said.

“I encourage all growers in the region to come along to the Farm Business Update and take advantage of the valuable learning opportunity offered through this forum.”

Grain market consultant Malcolm Bartholomaeus, who is also editor of NZX’s Profarmer newsletter, will begin the forum with an overview of the current state of play with grain markets and expectations for the remainder of 2013.

John Francis, from Holmes Sackett, will provide advice on what factors to consider when making business decisions regarding farm expansion.

The changing nature of farm financing and the opportunities arising from those changes will be a topic to be explored by Alan Blackburn, of Alan Blackburn and Associates, while Rogers Lawes of CSIRO will address the key issues to making profitable and sustainable crop sequencing decisions.

The University of Sydney’s Robert Fitch will offer a glimpse into the future of robotics in broad acre farming, before the day concludes with Dennis Hoiberg from Lessons Learnt Consulting discussing practical strategies to increasing business and personal resilience.

The Update will be at the Dookie campus of the University of Melbourne from 9am to 3.30pm, with catering provided (pre-registration is preferred for catering purposes).
