Horsham to host regional farm business forum
A special forum will be held in Horsham next month to help regional grain growers in their quest to develop a greater understanding and appreciation of the many facets of managing a farm business.
The Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) Farm Business Update on September 11 will feature a line-up of expert speakers who will offer insights and practical strategies to assist growers in building and maintaining successful farm enterprises.
“The GRDC’s Farm Business Updates are aimed at increasing grower and adviser understanding of and capacity in farm business management, which is a critical part of any farming enterprise,” said GRDC Southern Regional Panel chair Keith Pengilley.
“I encourage all growers in the region to come along to the Farm Business Update and take advantage of the valuable learning opportunity offered through this forum.”
Grain market consultant Malcolm Bartholomaeus, who is also editor of NZX’s Profarmer newsletter, will begin the forum with an overview of the current state of play with grain markets and expectations for the remainder of 2013.
The changing nature of farm financing and the opportunities arising from those changes will be a topic to be explored by Alan Blackburn, of Alan Blackburn and Associates.
Mutual Trust’s Peter O’Loughlin will look at the principles of generating wealth in broad acre farming businesses, while Rogers Lawes of CSIRO will address the key issues to making profitable and sustainable crop sequencing decisions.
University of Sydney’s Robert Fitch will offer a glimpse into the future of robotics in broad acre farming, before the day concludes with Phil O’Callaghan from ORM advising on the key drivers of business success.
The Update will be at the Department of Environment and Primary Industries’ Grains Innovation Park from 9am to 3.30pm, with catering provided (pre-registration is preferred for catering purposes).
