Research Update support grows

GRDC Updates 2013

Grain growers in the southern cropping region are increasingly attending Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) research Updates to source information and resources in their quest to boost productivity. A total of 1199 people attended the 14 regional grower Updates this year, with average attendances up seven per cent on 2012.

GRDC Southern Regional Panel chair Keith Pengilley says the increase in attendances is seen as an endorsement of the importance and relevance of the regional Update program for growers. “The Updates – featuring programs specifically tailored to address local issues – are designed to provide growers with support and advice for the current season and beyond, based on the outcomes of cutting-edge, GRDC-funded research and development,” Mr Pengilley said. “It is encouraging that more and more growers are taking time out from their busy lives to get along to the Updates which they rate highly in terms of the practical information being delivered and the topics covered. The Updates are also attracting a solid following from younger farmers – about one third of attendees this year were under the age of 35.” The Updates are co-ordinated and facilitated by agricultural consulting company ORM Pty Ltd.

Over the past six months, Updates for growers have been held at Marnoo (Victoria), Balaklava (SA), Corowa (NSW), Ganmain (NSW), Manangatang (Victoria), Warracknabeal (Victoria), Campbell Town (Tasmania), Forbes (NSW), Griffith (NSW), Moama (NSW), Lameroo (SA), Lock (SA), Naracoorte (SA) and Derrinallum (Victoria). According to feedback from growers attending the Updates, an average of 96% of respondents rated the Update programs mostly satisfactory or higher, an average of 79% of respondents believed that information delivered at the Updates will be used directly in their business, on average 97% of respondents thought the balance of the topics presented was correct, and on average 87% of respondents had a greater than 80% chance of attending a grower Update in 2014.
