Weeds, pests, probes and more on the agenda at Waikerie

Weed management, cost of production and enterprise mix, problem insect pests, soil moisture probes and nitrogen application…these are some of the topics to be discussed at a grains research forum at Waikerie next month.
The Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) is hosting a Grains Research Update for growers at the Waikerie Hotel/Motel on August 13.
GRDC Southern Regional Panel member Bill Long says the forum will be of enormous value to local growers looking for ways to improve their farming systems.
“The Update at Waikerie will feature several industry experts who will be providing growers with the latest information and advice on topics that are relevant to the region,” Mr Long said.
Presenters at the Waikerie Update include Chris Preston of the University of Adelaide, who will look at smarter weed management options including grass weed control with a focus on brome grass management.
Also focussing on weed management is Robin Schaefer from Bulla Burra Collaborative Farm, who will relay his experiences in driving down the weed seed bank with integrated weed management systems, and how a new precision spray rig has brought efficiencies to their chemical usage.
A session on cost of production and enterprise mix covering key management decisions and impacts on risk management will be run by Mike Krause from P2P Agri P/L.
Entomologist Kym Perry from the South Australian Research and Development Institute (SARDI) will present a ‘Crop Doctor’ session on persistent insect pests including Bryobia mites and lucerne flea, covering what control strategies worked well last year and what threats growers are facing this year.
Chris McDonough from Rural Solutions SA will look at recent work with soil moisture probes and how they assist in crop decision making.
The topic of nitrogen will be examined by Rick Llewellyn from CSIRO who will delve into the best nitrogen application strategies and associated risks.
The Update will be from 9am to 1pm, with morning tea and lunch provided. For a detailed program and to register, please visit www.orm.com.au or www.grdc.com.au/updatedates or contact ORM on 03 5441 6176 or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
