Crop protection and nutrition in focus at Cummins research forum
Author: Sharon Watt | Date: 05 Aug 2014
Protecting crops from diseases and pests and promoting crop yields and returns will be the thrust of a grains research forum at Cummins on August 20.
The Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) is hosting an Update for growers at the Ramblers Football Club Rooms, Pontons Grove.
GRDC Southern Regional Panel member Mark Stanley, of Port Lincoln, says the Update will provide local growers with timely and relevant information and advice.
“Growers will also have the opportunity to discuss pressing agronomic issues with leading research authorities,” Mr Stanley said.
Hugh Wallwork and Marg Evans from the South Australian Research and Development Institute (SARDI) will open the Update with a discussion about dealing with threatening diseases in wheat and barley.
Research results from liquid banding fungicides to control rhizoctonia, and other opportunities offered by liquid delivery systems, will be shared by SARDI’s Paul Bogacki and Peter Burgess of Liquid Systems.
Best practices for slug control will be presented by Jon Midwood from Southern Farming Systems in Victoria, including his key learnings from the UK’s ‘Cereals 2014 Expo’ in June.
Rob Norton from the International Plant Nutrition Institute will discuss nitrogen product, placement and timing and how to get the combination of all three right. He will also look at trace elements such as copper and manganese and whether they limit production.
Following the Update, a special presentation from Rob Buttimore of Dow AgroSciences, New Zealand, will offer simple and effective tips on understanding the chemistry within the spray tank and how to avoid it all going wrong.
Supported by Grain Producers SA, the Update will be from 9am to 1pm with morning tea and lunch provided. For a detailed program and to register, visit www.orm.com.au or www.grdc.com.au/updatedates or contact ORM on 03 5444 4299 or email email@example.com
