The integrated management of invertebrate pests in Tasmanian grain crops will be the focus of a workshop for advisers and growers at Campbell Town on September 9. The key issue of slugs, along with earwigs, diamondback moth, Helicoverpa larvae, aphids and associated viral diseases and other insect pests of concern to local growers, will be under the microscope. This Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) workshop is locally supported by Dow AgroSciences and Syngenta and addresses the needs of advisers and growers who seek an improved understanding of insects and their management to assist with implementation of more sustainable insect management practices. Workshop topics include implementing an integrated approach to insect management and decision making; monitoring, thresholds and management strategies for regionally important crops and insects; and integrated pest management tools including conserving beneficial insects and options for more selective insecticides. Workshop discussions will be led by Melina Miles (Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry Queensland), Paul Umina (cesar) and Michael Nash, (South Australian Research and Development Institute), and facilitated by John Cameron (ICAN).

The workshop will be at the Campbell Town Hotel and Bistro, starting at 8.30am. If weather permits, the afternoon discussion on practical aspects of pest identification, threshold determination, scouting and management will be conducted in the field. Participants will receive access to a first class resource kit including GRDC Fact Sheets, Ute Guides, course notes and presentations, and catering will be provided. To enable in-depth discussion on key issues, workshop numbers are limited so growers and advisers are encouraged to register early.
