Wagga Wagga workshop to discuss frost management in 2015

Date: 04 Mar 2015

Agrilink consultant Mick Faulkner

New South Wales agronomists, advisers, consultants and growers are invited to a pre-sowing technical workshop to discuss frost management in 2015. The workshop in Wagga Wagga on March 27 will be one of three forums being hosted by the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) in the southern cropping region to investigate best practice frost management ahead of this year’s cropping season.

Topics will include early sowing versus late sowing; frost patterns in the Australian grain belt; assessing synoptic charts and how to use this information; row spacing, stubble and recovery; characterising frost events and their impacts on grain sterility; and variety rankings and how to use this in decision making. The workshop at the Hotel Mercure will feature interactive sessions and demonstrations.

Guest speakers include Mick Faulkner, from Agrilink Agricultural Consultants; Neil Fettell from Central West Farming Systems; CSIRO Climate Applications scientist Steve Crimp; Ben Biddulph from the Department of Agriculture and Food Western Australia; Tim March from the University of Adelaide; and Andrew Skinner from MEA, which designs and manufactures environmental monitoring systems.

The workshop is being delivered via the GRDC Technical Workshop series, with in-kind support from the GRDC Frost Initiative – an integrated program addressing genetic, management and environmental approaches to mitigate the effects of frost.
