A unique opportunity to contribute to the grains research and development agenda in the southern cropping region is being made available to growers, advisers, scientists and other industry personnel.

Applications for positions on the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC) Southern Regional Panel are now open.

The part-time positions, for an initial two-year term, will commence on September 1, 2015.

Southern Regional Panel chair Keith Pengilley encourages people who are passionate about advancing the grains industry and improving grain grower profitability to consider applying for a position on the Panel.

“Being a Panel member is one of the most rewarding, stimulating and interesting roles on offer in our dynamic grains industry,” Mr Pengilley said.

“Panel members work closely with growers to identify cropping constraints and also play an important advisory and strategic role in helping to ensure that the GRDC’s investments in research, development and extension (RD&E) are directed towards the interests of growers.”

Nine Panel member positions are now open to people who understand the challenges and opportunities associated with farming systems in southern Australia.

“The Panel member positions are ideally suited to good communicators who have a sound knowledge of the grains industry and an interest in RD&E,” Mr Pengilley said.

Effective September 1, the boundary between the GRDC’s southern and northern cropping regions will be lowered to the New South Wales-Victorian border which means cropping areas in southern and central NSW, previously included in the southern cropping region, will become part of the northern region.

The Southern Regional Panel currently comprises chair Keith Pengilley, of Conara (Tasmania); deputy chair Chris Blanchard of Wagga Wagga (NSW); John Minogue of Barmedman (NSW); Neil Fettell of Condobolin (NSW); Geoff McLeod of Finley (NSW); Susan Findlay Tickner of Horsham (Victoria); Rob Sonogan of Swan Hill (Victoria); Bill Long of Ardrossan (SA); Richard Konzag of Mallala (SA); Mark Stanley of Port Lincoln (SA); and GRDC regional grower services executive manager Stuart Kearns of Canberra (ACT). Current members of the Panel are eligible to re-apply for a position.

Applications for the Panel positions close on June 9, 2015. More information about the GRDC Southern Regional Panel application process is available online or by emailing panels@grdc.com.au.
